An
interesting small paragraph taken from a magazine is this interview to
engineer Paolo Caccamo, who was technical director at the Innocenti
company in the 70's when the Mini & Mini Cooper were being assembled
with an Italian spirit. The translation reads as follows:
How we remade the "Mini"
'We had to improve quite a few components, mainly to do with
efficiency, driving and quality. It would take too long to list all the
necessary changes that we had to make, starting from the lubrication
system upto the clutch. We improved the cooling system that was almost
insufficient; we replaced the servo unit; we even modified the steering
rack, the suspension. The electrical system and the spark plugs seized
with rain: we screened these parts, improving the mechanical efficiency.
Not only: we even improved the quality of some body panels and plastic
elements, eliminating water infiltrations entering the interior with
improved seals. Thus, at the end of the 70s, the Italian Mini Cooper had
become a brilliant, efficient and reliable sport car.'

on the Mini Mare, a specially built Mini that Ferdinando
Innocenti used as a tender for his yacht! Only two examples of this Mini
were built making it a classic car lover's dream! Apparently one of them
got burned while the other one, after having been abandoned in the
backyard of a heartless owner was bought by a classic car restorer that
brought it back to its original splendors.

"Innocenti: una storia in
sintesi", a brief history on the Innocenti appeared in the classic
car magazine La Manovella, March 1997.
